Just Up

Caught the NUS team's final preliminary round here in DC, with Nich (is that how you spell the shortened version of his name) and Sarah speaking. They got very positive feedback from the judges, and I thought that these were largely well-deserved, although their overuse of "your excellency" did not escape the notice of one of the excellencies, and I did think it too 'Asian supplicant', if you know what I mean.

Keith and I had a fascinating discussion on the way from the Capital Hilton (where the moots are being held) to school, regarding intelligence and what it means. Its substantive content, if you will. Its so much easier to dismiss a person as being unintelligent, stupid, than actually finding an example of someone who is truly intelligent. I can think of a few names, but I'll keep them to myself ;)

Job hunt still proving elusive, I wonder if I have been screwing up my telephone interviews by being too candid, or worse, boring. Time will tell.

And to any of you out there right now who may be finding the waves of life lapping upon your shore a little too keenly (wow what a well-conceived but terribly expressed metaphor), know that you are not alone, and your friends are here for you. They admire you, respect you, and care for you. They think the world of you, and hope that you can see in yourself that strength and loyalty that is emanates so brightly from you.

Maybe it is because intelligence can be defined in multiple ways, but an unintelligent person can simply be defined as someone that lacks in all of the traits of an intelligent person. An intelligent person could be one that manages to grasp difficult concepts quickly, a person who thinks out of the box, a resourceful person, a person with a knack at sports because of his or her ability to see the game play out, a person with excellent spatial ability, a person who manages to make people laugh with sharp apposite comments. I don't think it is difficult to find an intelligent person =)

But I think intelligence is overrated. There are other valuable traits which we often overlook in "unintelligent" people such as sincerity, tenacity, magnanimity, kindness, confidence. Somehow, even if unintelligent people possess all of these other traits, their lack of intelligence somehow makes them companions whose companionship you sometimes enjoy less than your funny intelligent friends. (Though I must point out that the converse is not always true. You and I, I'm sure, can readily think of intelligent irritating people)

Your metaphor isn't too bad. It gets the message across. And it's an inspiring one, at this point in my life, where everything seems a little bleak.

Good luck with the job hunting. Take your own advice- there's an X factor about you which someone (many someones) will pick up eventually =)
